    Position Summary:

    Drs. Anas El-Aneed (Pharmacy), and Lipu Wang and Randy Kutcher (Agriculture) are looking for a Ph.D. student to conduct analytical research examining mycotoxins within wheat crops that may impact grain quality and marketability as well as the health and safety of animals and humans. The mycotoxins are produced by multiple Fusarium spp. (fungi) causing Fusarium head blight (FHB) a destructive disease of small grain cereal crops.

    A common Fusarium-produced mycotoxin found in North America is deoxynivalenol (DON); however, mounting evidence suggests that there are many DON-related structures, which are being discovered and characterized. The main goal for the Ph.D. student is to develop a targeted analytical method to detect and measure DON-derivatives that have authentic standards. In addition, a screening method should be established for DON-derivatives that do not have authentic standards.

    The successful applicant will conduct their research within the laboratory of Dr. El-Aneed with an expected start date of September 2024.

    Qualifications

    • MSc degree in life sciences, such as chemistry, biochemistry, agriculture or relevant sciences (received in the past 3 years) or undergraduate degrees with at least 3 years relevant work experience.
    • Fluency in English and excellent communication skills.

    Two funded Ph.D. positions in plant development

    We are seeking candidates to join our team to work on two independent Ph.D. projects:

    1. “Hormonal control of stamen filament elongation in Arabidopsis thaliana.” Using confocal microscopy, RNA-Seq, and fluorescent reporters we will reconstruct 3D growth dynamics and anatomy of this organ. Biophysical, hormonal, and genetic manipulations will provide insight into how the hormones act. This project will be held in collaboration with Dr Jason Reed (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA), Dr Clay Wight, and Dr Bastiaan Bargmann (Virginia Tech, USA).

    2. “Growth analysis of body-axis regulators during radial and bilateral style morphogenesis.” We will study cellular dynamics underlying the 3D formation of a radial style compared to bilateral mutants. This project will be in collaboration with Dr Laila Moubayidin and Dr Richard Smith (John Innes Center, UK).

    We are looking for highly motivated candidates who are strongly interested in plant developmental biology. The applicant should have the ability to solve scientific problems, good interpersonal skills, and be able to work in an interdisciplinary environment. Experience in microscopy and molecular biology is an asset. Diversity is considered a strength within the lab and all qualified applicants will receive equal consideration.

    M.S. Assistantship: Does Adaptive Flood Management in Greentree Reservoirs Improve Red Oak Seedling Survival and Health? 

    College of Forestry, Agriculture and Natural Resources,

    The College of Forestry, Agriculture & Natural Resources at the University of Arkansas at Monticello is seeking applicants for a M.S. Assistantship available beginning August 16, 2024. The assistantship is half  time and carries an annual stipend of $18,000 plus tuition.  

    Project: Greentree reservoirs (GTRs), wetland forests with human-controlled hydroperiods, provide a  variety of ecosystem services, including habitat for migratory waterfowl. Red oak species are key components of these ecosystems, but are threatened by current management practices. Studies are  needed to test potential sustainable management practices for GTRs. The MS student’s thesis research will include field studies and possibly controlled environment studies to better understand the interactive effects of temperature, flood, and dormancy on oak health and root physiology. Studies will answer  questions that are not only key to improving GTR management, but also invaluable for restoration of  bottomland hardwood forests with natural hydroperiods. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn relevant research techniques, and to interact with representatives from state and federal conservation agencies working to develop scientifically informed management recommendations for GTR forests. 

    Requirements: Applicants must have a 2.7 overall undergraduate GPA or 3.0 GPA in the last 60 semester  hours of undergraduate courses and satisfactory GRE scores. A B.S. degree in a natural resources-related  field is also required. Applicants must have a valid U.S. driver’s license or obtain the same within 60 days  of starting employment. Overnight travel is required as well as the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.  

    Location and Facilities: The College of Forestry, Agriculture & Natural Resources is located in Monticello, Arkansas in the southeastern portion of the state. The Arkansas Forest Resources Center is also headquartered here, and is administered by the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.     Job Description: We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Research Technician for a temporary 12-month contract, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability. This role involves crucial participation in a comprehensive research project aimed at optimizing polyploidization techniques in hemp plants and developing new hemp varieties. The ideal candidate will be instrumental in the entire research process, from optimizing existing techniques to documenting and reporting findings. The majority of the project will be conducted on-site at our partnered institution Carleton University located at 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, ON, K1S 5B6.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead the optimization of existing polyploidization techniques for hemp plants, ensuring the production of genetically stable tetraploid hemp plants.
    • Utilize optimized techniques to cultivate tetraploid hemp plants, followed by rigorous testing and verification using flow cytometry and other analysis methods (e.g PCR).
    • Conduct assessments of the physical and phytochemical traits of tetraploid plants, comparing growth patterns, cannabinoid profiles, and other relevant traits.
    • Engage in the crossbreeding of tetraploid plants with diploid pollen donors to produce triploid (F1) seeds, managing the process using colloidal silver from initiation to the production of the first batch of seeds.
    • Compile and document comprehensive research findings and methodologies, ensuring clear and detailed reporting of the polyploidization process, tetraploid plant characteristics, and initial crossbreeding outcomes.
    • Assist with analysis of cannabinoid content via HPLC

    Educational Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Agronomy, or a related field, OR Research Technician, Laboratory Technician, Biotechnology College Diploma or Equivalent
    • Master’s degree or higher is preferred but not required
    • Proven experience in plant genetics, breeding, or biotechnology is highly advantageous.

    Skills and Qualifications:

    • Strong background in plant biology, genetics, or a closely related field.
    • Experience with polyploidization, flow cytometry, HPLC and genetic analysis is an asset.

    Job Summary: 

    The Department of Biology invites applications for one permanent full-time, tenure-track Faculty  position. We are seeking applicants who have expertise in the field of plant biology.  

    The successful applicant will be expected to teach a wide variety of courses including first year biology  (BIO111, BIO112), but their main teaching responsibilities will be second year core courses such as  Biochemistry and Metabolism (BIO201), Cellular Signaling and Regulation of Gene Expression (BIO202)  and/or Genetics (BIO220) along with teaching existing upper-level courses such as plant physiology  (BIO308) and expanding our fourth-year plant biology offerings.  

    We seek broadly trained applicants who share our passion for, and commitment to, excellence in  undergraduate teaching in a student-centered environment and who successfully integrate their  scholarship into their teaching. Applicants must have exceptional communication and teaching skills; a  demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level; and demonstrable willingness and  ability to develop an externally funded research program to provide research opportunities for  undergraduate students. Areas of interest in terms of research agenda are open but preference will be  given to applicants with experience conducting research with undergraduate students with access to  standard field or lab equipment. The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate in  departmental activities, service, events, and initiatives. Interest in participating in community outreach,  pursuing professional development activities, and Indigenization in the biology classroom are  considered as additional assets. 

    The mission of the Biology Department at the University of the Fraser Valley is to provide students with  a unique appreciation and understanding of the living world. We incorporate a student-centered focus  to our courses and deliver a practical hands-on approach to learning. Small class discussions, student  presentations, as well as scientific experimentation and analysis are integral to our courses and provide  essential skills for our students. We also explore ways to incorporate Indigenous ways of understanding  and sharing scientific ideas in the classroom. 

    Qualifications: 

    Applicants must have completed a PhD in Plant Biology or a closely related discipline. Applicants must  have demonstrated teaching experience at the University level. Priority will be given to candidates with  teaching expertise in similar courses as those listed in this job posting.

    Assistant Professor - Plant Pathology

    The Department of Plant, Food, and Environmental Sciences (PFES) in the Dalhousie University Faculty of Agriculture invites applications from qualified candidates for a full- time, tenure stream faculty position in Plant Pathology at the Assistant Professor rank. The successful candidate will commence July 1, 2024 (or negotiable) and contribute to Teaching (40%), Research (40%) and Service (20%) responsibilities. 

    The successful candidate is expected to develop a productive, innovative, and competitively funded research program working in plant pathology that is recognized regionally, nationally, and internationally. Potential areas of interest include but are not limited to:

    (i) Epidemiological approaches using spatial/temporal digital technologies and data analytics,

    (ii) Omics approaches applied to plant pathology,

    (iii) Host-pathogen interactions within the context of changing environments,

    (iv) Applying artificial intelligence and smart technologies, to study pathogens and identify management solutions,

    (v) Disease management and development of agroecological solutions that improve crop resilience, and/or

    (vi) Post-harvest pathogen management.

    The successful applicant will:

    • Have Ph.D. or equivalent degree in plant pathology, ecology, epidemiology, or related field (degree must be awarded by start of appointment)
    • Have a record of independent research in plant pathology or a closely related discipline with application to Plant Pathology as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals or demonstrate potential for a strong research publication record.
    • Demonstrate an ability or potential to acquire research funding through grant-writing and will be evaluated on their potential to develop a strong externally funded program, including Tri-Council (https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca) funding.
    • Show evidence of their potential to become an international leader in the field of Plant Pathology. We seek a team-player and team-builder who can forge synergies within and between academia, government research institutions, industry, and other stakeholders within and beyond the Atlantic Region.
    • Demonstrate experience or potential to teach effectively at the undergraduate level.
    • Ideally have completed (and show evidence for) at least some professional development related to teaching.
    • Be a clear and stimulating communicator who can inspire students of all levels, support Faculty initiatives, and participate in growing the reputation of the Faculty and University.
